Health screening enables early detection of the employees’ medical condition and helps to keep it under control. This is important as it can affect their ability to carry out work safely.
Learn why workplace health screening is important, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic. The latest Campaign talk titled ‘The Business of Health Screening – Cost or Benefit?’ is organised by the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council. The talk will be conducted by an Occupational Medicine specialist from the healthcare sector who will share the benefits of health screening at the workplace. These benefits include reducing excessive costs due to treatment of complications and absenteeism while boosting health, safety and productivity in the workplace, all of which will power the long-term success of businesses.

Beware of fatigue when taking on a second job
The suggestion that full-time employees be allowed to take on a second job for better job security without compromising productivity, safety & health and work-life balance was recently discussed in Parliament on 1 September 2020.
The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council would like to echo that workplace safety and health should not be compromised while striving for job security. Workers who are taking on a second job or performing dual roles, especially strenuous ones, are more prone to fatigue at work. Once fatigue sets in, a worker’s ability to concentrate on a task may be severely affected and may thereby increase the risk of accident.
|Joint responsibility between workers and employers|
|To tackle fatigue issues brought about by second or multiple jobs requires the collective efforts of employers and workers. The WSH Council encourages workers who take on a second job to have a conversation with their employers so as to address the issue of fatigue. Such a conversation may not be intuitive and easy, but acknowledging the risk of fatigue is the first step towards mitigating it. |
Employers should be open to discuss options with their workers to ensure that the work can be carried out without compromising safety and health. Employers should also work closely with workers and encourage them to look out for one another and identify any early signs of fatigue by observing common symptoms (non-exhaustive) such as:
|• undue tiredness;|
• compromised hand-eye coordination or clumsiness;
• slowed thinking or forgetfulness;
• reduced ability for problem-solving; and
• poor judgement of distance, speed and/or time.
|Employers are encouraged to co-create solutions with their workers. Employers can refer to the WSH Guidelines on Fatigue Management for suggestions on risk controls to prevent fatigue at the workplace. Other useful references include the poster and training slides on the 6 Basic WSH Rules on Fatigue Management.|
